Our motives & ambitions
XS4ALL has its roots in a close-knit international internet community which played a large part in the creation of the internet. We therefore cherish and seek to protect the original values of the internet as a worldwide computer network that allows the free and uncensored exchange of data, information and ideas for everyone. XS4ALL therefore believes it has a special responsibility for the development of the internet
The internet and society
The internet has given rise to a new digital society which calls for a new set of rules. XS4ALL promotes civil rights in this digital society. We are actively opposing the mandatory retention of all our customers' internet traffic data. We seek to initiate debates on freedom of speech and privacy on the internet.
Freedom of speech
XS4ALL believes that freedom of speech is an immense asset. Every voice must be able to be heard. It is a fundamental tenet of our democracy. XS4ALL considers that internet providers should not concern themselves with the views of their customers. For XS4ALL, it is the laws of the Netherlands that determine what customers can and cannot publish. We do not judge the content ourselves. Such a judgment should be made by an independent court and not by private companies. If it turns out that customers' content hosted by XS4ALL contravenes Dutch law, it intervenes rapidly and appropriately.

Technology
XS4ALL prefers to use open source software for which the source code is in the public domain. Almost all of our main servers are equipped with the FreeBSD operating system. The open source policy means we are not dependent on suppliers. Out technical choices are focused on security, stability and speed.
Innovation
XS4ALL aspires to be the most innovative internet provider in the Netherlands. Products and services are only acceptable if they have passed the test of critical assessment by the internet community. System administrators who feel at home as customers of XS4ALL willingly test the new internet services. By working with customers in this way, we are implicitly developing a quality mark for internet services.

Privacy
The protection of personal data is one of the cornerstones of XS4ALL. We only use our customers' address details for our internal administration. We also take stringent action against the sending of spam. XS4ALL therefore advocates the opt-in principle, whereby internet users themselves state in advance whether they wish to receive certain information.

Doing business fairly
We believe in open communication and doing business fairly with the outside world. We try not to sell customers more than they need. Our account prices are all-inclusive, so there will be no more bills further down the line. The helpdesk can be contacted at standard telephone call charges. And if things go wrong, we do not conceal the fact. Fault reports are published on our website and on teletext.
Security
From its origins in the world of hacking, XS4ALL knows better than anyone how important security is. Thanks to this knowledge and experience we have one of the most secure networks. That is in our interest, as well as in our customers' interest. We help our subscribers to protect their own systems by providing a virus scanner, a firewall and a spam filter.

Do-it-yourself
Ever since the earliest days we have had many subscribers who are just as active on the internet as we are ourselves. For example, of all the Dutch providers XS4ALL has the largest number of subscribers with their own homepage. These enterprising and discerning customers prefer to operate the controls themselves. By visiting the Service Centre, subscribers can adjust all manner of settings themselves.
